Dear Subscriber,

Helene Lloyd The great results posted by the Russian market for the first 6 months of 2010, mean that tour operators are busy expanding into new destinations, with Latin America and SE Asia appearing to the be the favourite destinations this winter.

However, it seems the combination of the structural changes combined with the recession in 2008-9 have fundamentally changed the structure of the Russian market for good, and the recent very low attendance at the Leisure travel exhibition in Moscow, was proof of this. Russian travel agents do not require the organization of an international exhibition in order to meet with the tour operators and as most of them are only travel agents, they are much less interested in meeting with foreign counter parts than before. As a result exhibitions are much less effective than at previous times when the market was less developed and workshops and country branded roadshows are the best way forward.
