dooeAll the hotels and resorts in Russia will soon be required to go through an obligatory classification process. The move is due to the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympic Games which will be hosted in the Black Sea resort of Sochi. Previously, the hotel classification was voluntary, but this will now change due to the implementation of a new law, signed in June 2010, that will shortly come into power. At present, there are 471 certified hotels in Russia, only 10% of the total hotel stock (approx 4,500 hotels on total). In Moscow along there are only 31classified hotels.

By the end of 2010, Rezidor Hotel Group plans to open 2 new hotels in Sochi under Radisson and Park Inn brands. Both properties will be located at the ski resort Roza Khutor, which is now under construction for 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Another Park Inn is planned to be opened in 2013 in Voronezh in Southern Russia.

Ibis, part of the Accor hotel group, has announced plans to expand their presence in Russia and the CIS. In the next decade, Accor aims to have minimum 50 new properties in these markets. In 2010, Ibis hotels will open in Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Yaroslavl in Russia, and Kiev in Ukraine.

Intercontinental Hotel Group (IHG) is planning to launch 7 new properties in Ukraine and Russia by the end of 2012 including properties in Moscow, Kiev and Novosibirsk. The hotels will be under different IHG brands, including a Holiday Inn, which is to open in Kiev in 2011.

pinAccording to Knight Frank, a leading real estate consulting company, Moscow has one of the lowest occupancy rates in Europe. Their research shows, that the average annual occupancy rate (from April 2009 to March 2010) in 4-5 star hotels in Moscow was only 58.5%, which is much lower than most other European capitals. However, Moscow still remains one of the most expansive cities in the world for a hotel room. The average cost per night at a 4-5* property in Moscow is $237, compared to $230 in Paris or $216 in London.
