2010 outbound travel statistic

In March 2011, Rostourism published the statistics for outbound figures of 2010. As usual, these figures are much lower than the ones provided by the National Tourism Boards of the leading travel destinations, due to the fact that they only capture traffic on direct flights. However, they show a record 32% growth of Russian outbound Leisure tourism compared to 2009, which indicates the full recovery of the travel market after the crisis years of 2008-2009.

In absolute figures, 40 Millions Russian travelled abroad, including more than 12.5 Million for leisure purposes. The total increase of outbound travel in 2010 (including Leisure, Business, VFF, etc) compared to 2009 was 15%.

The Top 5 destinations remain the same as over the past few years and the top 3 destinations alone, make up over 50% of the market share, it should be noted that none of these destinations require a visa.

    • Turkey -21% market share
    • Egypt -20% market share
    • China -13% market share
    • Finland -6% market share
    • Germany -4% market share

The destinations with the fastest growth in 2010 were: Thailand (+100%), the Dominican Republic (+70%) and Vietnam (+68%). Vietnam's high growth rate has enabled it to appear in the Top 30 destinations for  the Russian market for the first time. Among other destinations with record growth were: Mexico, due to numerous charter flights from Russia to Mexico launched in 2010; Portugal (+80%), Cuba (+74%) and Morocco (+55%).

In general, out of 48 destinations with over 10,000 arrivals, only 3 countries showed negative results: Singapore (-2%), Ukraine (-6%) and Norway (-9%). In comparison with the 2009 figures, about one third of all destinations included in the survey showed an increase.
