Russian Traveller Profiles from 5 Key Russian Cities by TMI

As the Russian market is not homogenous, and the traveller profile vary from one region another, TMI Consultancy performed a consumer survey of 1500 respondents in 5 key Russian cities, including Moscow and St Petersburg in the European part of Russia and in Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, the key cities in the Russian Far East. The methodology was a face-to-face street poll with 300 people in each city in prime locations, such as business centers or premium class shopping malls. 37% of participants were aged 20-29 years, while 21% were in their 30's and 12% were older than 50 years old. Approx. 60% of those interviewed were female.

Average monthly income: In Moscow and St-Petersburg the majority of respondents earned from 1000 to 3000 Euro per month, but in the Far East the income level was much lower, and 77% of respondents earned less than 1000 Euro a month. Respondents from Vladivostok had a higher income than those from Khabarovsk and Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, nevertheless 27% of Vladivostok respondents had an income less than 400 Euro, while in the other two cities in the Far East, this figure reached 40% or more of respondents.

Travel Frequency: In general about 60% of all respondents noted, that they can afford to travel abroad once a year. 9% said they can afford to travel up to 3 times a year or more. While all people interviewed in Moscow and St-Petersburg said that they travel abroad at least once a year, 30% of the respondents in the Far East have never been abroad. In general, approximately 70% of people from Moscow and St-Petersburg travel only once a year, and 30% - more than once a year. 31% of Moscow respondents travel two times a year, and 4% - at least 3 times a year or more. Muscovites with an average or higher than average income believe that travelling abroad is an integral part of their lifestyle. In the Far East, 47% of respondents answered that they normally travel abroad once a year, and 20% travelled two times a year or more.

Travel Spending: In general, 48% of all respondents usually spend between 800-2500 Euro per trip abroad, while 9% spend more than 2500 Euro per trip. People from Moscow and St-Petersburg tended to spend more than those living in the Far East - as their income levels are higher. 73% of Moscow and St-Petersburg respondents said that they spent from 800 to 2500 Euro per trip. The average spend per trip is 1,500 Euro.

In the Far East, only 21% spent from 800-2500 Euro per trip, compared with 73% in Moscow and St-Petersburg. 37% of Far East respondent mentioned that they spent less than 800 Euro per overseas trip. 30% of respondents declined to reveal their average spend.
