Online Bookings to double over the next 2 years

According to Skyscanner, a leading European airline tickets search engines, the number of Russians booking their flights online will increase by four times in the next couple of years. The majority of Russian using Skyscanner are based in Moscow (46%), followed by St-Petersburg (21%). During February-July 2010 the Russian traffic on Skyscanner increased by 138%. 60% of all requests were for international flights, the Top 10 cities searched for were: Moscow, Bangkok, Paris, St-Petersburg, Barcelona, Tel Aviv, Prague, Milan, Munich and Berlin.

According to the survey by Data Insight, up to 7 million Russians buy goods and services online, which is only 1.6% of all their total  turnover. The largest proportion of online purchases,18% was the purchase of online travel. During the first half of 6 months, over 2 million Russians purchased their travel services online, with 57% of them being air tickets. Forecasts predict that during the next few years, online market sales in Russia will grow 2.5 times, particularly in the large regional cities with over one million. Today, only 2-5% of all tickets in Russia are purchased online, but it is expected to increase to 10% by 2012. The main barriers for online ticketing business are high banking commissions and low level of trust by consumers of online payments.
